In 1974 Bob Meier took his first pottery class at Appalachian State University to fill in his schedule. This was the first time seeing the process of clay being turned into a finished piece of pottery. He exclaims it was like “an epiphany”. This class led him to a career in pottery, and since that day, Bob has worked to hone his craft. A guiding question in Bob’s work is “Does form follow function?” The answer to this question can be seen in his work, which, along with the work of numerous other High-Country potters, can be found at his Gallery in Downtown Boone. Doe Ridge Pottery Gallery specializes in pottery as home décor and functional ware.

Doe Ridge Pottery Gallery was opened in 1988 on King Street in the heart of downtown Boone. After 36 years, Meier’s friend and protege, Nathan Fields, purchased the business in July 2024 and moved it to West Jefferson. The gallery and studio space provide visitors with a unique experience. They can find anything from functional stoneware pottery to handmade birdhouses, vegetable steamers, and one-of-a-kind, object-oriented designer pieces. Classes are available for potters at every stage of their clay journey.

Bob says, “All of the work from the potters in our gallery reflects my interest in intriguing designs and exacting craftsmanship.” Doe Ridge Pottery Gallery serves as a store, gallery, and studio, and welcomes guests seven days a week.
