Saturday Sewing Circle: Butterfly Embroidery Workshop

July 10, 2021 @ 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm

$25.00

Join us on Zoom for an afternoon of hand embroidery.

We had such an amazing turnout and experience at our first Virtual Embroidery Workshop last year, and we are excited to host another on on July 10, 2021! We will be stitching a brand new (to us) antique pattern, so if you participated last year you can try out a fresh project this summer.

This year, we are embracing summer and trying out a pattern printed in Godey’s Lady’s Book, a 19th century women’s magazine that published sewing projects, fashion plates, music, and short stories. We copied this design for a butterfly, which reminded us a bit of the Eastern Tiger Swallowtail, North Carolina’s state butterfly.

Assistant Site Manager Lauren May will walk you through the project, teaching several basic embroidery stitches, providing tips, and sharing the history of embroidery crafts.

Registration required. $25 per person. All participants will receive an embroidery kit in the mail with all the supplies needed to complete the project—a handkerchief, embroidery floss, 4-inch embroidery hoop, and a needle. When registering please be sure to include your address so staff can mail your supplies to you. 48 hours before the workshop you will receive an email from the Vance Birthplace with the Zoom link and directions for the workshop. You can register here using Eventbrite.

The proceeds earned from this program support educational initiatives at the Vance Birthplace. If you can’t attend, but would like to donate, please use the donation tab under tickets. Any amount helps.

We welcome submission of Western North Carolina events focused on our heritage themes of mountain music, crafts, foodways, outdoors and Cherokee culture. Please submit two weeks in advance.
