Kim Campbell Ross

Flat Foot Dance Instructor Haywood County

Kim Campbell Ross grew up in Snowflake, Virginia, a mountain community in Scott County. Her family consisted of traditional dancers, and they, as well as other community members, taught Ross to flatfoot when she was young. In the 1990s, she moved to Haywood County, North Carolina, where she became involved in the local tradition of team clogging.

With sons Zeb and Levi, Kim Ross founded the J. Creek Cloggers, a dance team whose specialties include team clogging, broom dances, and square dances. Kim also, along with her husband, Terry, is a square dance caller. When spring arrives, you can find the clogging team dancing as the main house team at Maggie Valley’s Stompin’ Ground. The Stompin’ Ground is one of the area’s best-known clogging venues. In 2018 the cloggers performed throughout the year at the Crest Mountain Dinner Show in Asheville, NC, as well as appearing at festivals throughout the region.

In addition to performing with and directing the J. Creek Cloggers, Kim manages her sons’ string band, The Ross Brothers & Terry Woody Band. She is also a dance instructor teaching Mountain Dance at Haywood Community College. In her spare time, Kim gives dance workshops at the Folkmoot Festival, of which she was a previous member on the Board of Directors, and also is available for private lesion at her personal dance studio. Kim holds titles in Grand Champion competitions for old style flat-footing.
