The Yadkin Valley Fiber Center (YVFC) exists as a space of learning and creativity dedicated to broadening the understanding of fiber arts, including crafts such as weaving, spinning, and felting; and fiber-based sculpture. Located in historic Elkin, the Fiber Center offers a variety of courses from local and visiting artists and studio loom rentals. The Yadkin Valley Fiber Center is an affiliate member of the Foothills Arts Center. In a continuation of Elkin’s textile tradition, the YVFC conducts the Olds College Master Weaving and Spinning Programs and hosts numerous fiber-related guild meetings.
The Master Weaver Program consists of five progressive levels of classroom and independent study involving skill development, research studies, and project assignments. It provides an educational environment in which an individual can acquire the skill to become an independent weaver. While the Fiber Center’s focus is weaving, it welcomes any student of the fiber arts with an interest in cultivating their craft within its walls. Classes focus on a wide number of topics including weaving on the rigid heddle loom, rag rugs, and multiple methods of dyeing. Ongoing beginning courses are offered in weaving on the four shaft, rigid heddle and Inkle looms. In addition to a full teaching space, the Yadkin Valley Fiber Center occasionally offers a range of fiber materials for sale and is a Schacht Equipment retailer.
