WAXON Batik & Dye Studio is an open textile studio in West Asheville. At this unique spot, you can both buy and make hand-dyed items. Once inside, visitors are greeted with color and expression at every turn. It’s part shop, part studio, part classroom. All work for sale is dyed on-site, and an education in dyeing is at hands’ length.
The studio teaches four distinct methods for creating patterns with dye. The ancient technique of batik applies hot beeswax to fabric. The wax acts as a resist against the dye, and leaves a crackled, textured design when removed. The Japanese art of shibori uses clamping, binding, folding, or wrapping fabric to achieve dozens of patterns. Classic tie-dyeing is taken to the next level when taught by the experts at WAXON, and the use of ice in tie-dyeing creates a more subdued, melted effect called ice-dyeing. Products made using each of these methods are available for sale in the shop.
WAXON offers dyeing parties, private lessons, workshops, and classes for all ages. Pick up handmade ready-to-wear clothing and gifts, all made in the West Asheville studio. Garments are hand dyed in a variety of styles, from subtle to psychedelic. Also find home wares, kitchen and bedroom linens, decorative batik pieces, and dye kits. All merchandise is made from plant fibers, no synthetics, and many are sewn on the premises.
