Speckled Dog Pottery, just outside Bakersville, isn’t afraid of a little color. Robbie Bell started making pottery out of necessity. An avid collector of handmade ceramics for use in his catering business, he finally accepted the challenge of creating his own pots. A beginner’s throwing class started him on the journey that’s led to him to Speckled Dog Pottery.

Speckled Dog produces multiple lines of work. Robbie’s pots are both wheel thrown and hand built. The glazes are food safe and can be placed in the oven, microwave, and dishwasher. All Speckled Dog pottery is created using white porcelaneous stoneware, carved, and glazed. This mixture of method and material allows the color in the glazes to pop, giving the work its signature hues.

Visitors to Speckled Dog Pottery can enjoy a space that’s half studio and half showroom. Depending on the day, Robbie may be throwing pots, glazing them, or preparing them for firing in the kiln. Speckled Dog Pottery specializes in pots for daily use, dinnerware, serving pieces, and drinking vessels. The studio is in production twelve months a year and often guests will be able to watch the process.
