Reems Creek Pottery is a collective pottery studio and gallery just outside of downtown Weaverville. Potter Rachel Smith saw a unique opportunity in 2015 to bring together a community of artists to create, exchange ideas, and share equipment. Reems Creek Pottery operates in what was formerly a furniture factory, in the space that once held kilns for drying wood. Kilns still warm the space today, but now it’s pottery inside them.
Reems Creek Pottery has five studio spaces. Kilns, slab rollers, and gallery space are shared among all studio potters. There are typically six to eight potters represented in the gallery, with most of the work made on premises. A small amount of the work is made in nearby home studio spaces and fired in the studio kilns.
Visitors to Reems Creek Pottery can walk in and see potters at work throwing pots, making slab pieces, glazing, loading kilns, and all the other tasks that are needed to make finished pieces. The gallery showcases thrown, hand-built, and slab-built styles. From contemporary to traditional, functional to decorative, there is something for all ceramics lovers. Items for sale include mugs, vases, trays, plates, magnets, bowls, sculpture, lidded containers, and more. The resident potters staff the gallery sales area, so visitors can ask questions about any work for sale.
