Pottery Place is located on Main Street in Sparta in a house that was built by local carpenter Joe Finney for Emma and F. A. Mitchell in the 1930’s. Sara Harper (the great granddaughter of F. A. Mitchell) and Tina Duffey are first cousins and co-owners of the Pottery Place. Sara and Tina often joke that together they have about 75 years of experience in clay. Their creations are scattered throughout the house in five rooms in the downstairs area. Antiques are displayed upstairs and downstairs, and there is also a former bedroom reserved for meetings of the Alleghany Quilters Guild.
Visitors to the Pottery Place will find creations by Sara, Tina, as well as many of their friends. Using two wheels and two kilns, the pair create high fired stoneware as well as low fired sculpture. As the name suggests, there is a wide offering of functional and decorative pottery including mugs, bowls, plates, tile work, flower arrangers, and nativity scenes. Visitors can also find quilts including baby quilts and matching stuffed bears, photography, watercolors and prints, Intaglio prints, slumped and fused glass, carved gourds, and quilted pictures. Work from other artists includes antiques, felted bowls, recycled tin, and barn quilts.
