Night Owl Iron Works in downtown Rutherfordton started in 2016 when Jordan Jackson turned his self-taught blacksmithing hobby into his trade. In 2019, Rachel Jackson joined the team and added her own skills in custom leatherwork and marketing. Today, the full functional blacksmith shop runs on a propane forge that reaches at 3,000 degrees and the leatherwork focuses on traditional techniques and custom designs. Night Owl Iron Works creates a large variety of handcrafted items ranging from large architectural pieces such as gates, stair railings, and unique sculptures, to home décor, handbags, wallets, and small ornamental keepsakes. Among their signature offerings are their hand-forged roses.
Night Owl strives to create a unique experience where visitors and customers can learn about the history of blacksmithing and leatherwork through demonstrations and classes. Their broad range of inventory includes items such as leather handbags, valet trays, key chains, hatchets, knives, home décor pieces, and more. Jordan and Rachel offer classes, demonstrations, and a retail space where Night Owl’s handcrafted items can be purchased. Instructional offerings include classes on making railroad spike knives, forging wooden-handled knives, learning blacksmithing basics, and creating campfire cook sets.
