Mud Dabber’s Pottery of Brevard was founded by the John Dodson family in 1988. John was a staff potter at Rockbrook Camp for Girls and set up the store to pursue pottery year-round. Today, his son, John, runs the Mud Dabber’s Pottery located in a former general store built in 1922. Mud Dabber’s has one of the largest selections of locally produced pottery in the area. Over 35 potters are represented in the gallery, including six potters who work in a studio located adjacent to the store. A variety of pottery styles and glazes are available in both functional and decorative forms.
Mud Dabber’s is located just off Scenic Highway 276 near the French Broad River. The general store building and mill building, which is used as a studio, were constructed in 1922 on the banks of Dunn’s Creek. Today, the work is displayed on the original shelves. Visitors are invited to watch potters at work in the studio.
Mud Dabber’s is surrounded by public land, including Pisgah National Forest, Dupont State Recreational Forest, and Gorges State Park. Each December, Mud Dabber’s hosts an Open House with hot cider as a way to gather, celebrate the season, and show appreciation for its customers.
