Katherine Lile’s move back to NC in 2015 wove together a number of threads. In Blowing Rock, she found the convergence of family, new community, and stunning geography. These threads, along with the ones she uses in making her rope baskets, inspired the name for her studio, shop and event space: The Mountain Thread Company. Located adjacent to Memorial Park on Main Street, The Mountain Thread Company provides visitors an opportunity to purchase baskets, quilts, and other unique fabric arts and to see those works of craft being made. Working with suppliers and manufacturers to offer as local a product as possible, The Mountain Thread Company offers the chance to purchase completed products or to start your own from one of their ready-made kits.
The Mountain Thread Company is a retail shop, specializing in coiled rope baskets and high-quality cottons. The shop goes through a mile and a half of rope a week in production! It’s also a studio, where visitors can see talented artisans make modern and distinct craft items.
Visitors can also become artists by attending classes and workshops on rope basket making and quilting. The Mountain Thread Company also offers private bookings for events from bachelorette parties to quilting retreats.
