Mica Fine Contemporary Craft is a cooperative gallery situated in the heart of Bakersville. Established in 2012, Mica showcases an array of work from 13 local artists. Mica is owned and operated completely by artists, so when visitors walk in the door, they are greeted by an artist who can provide a wealth of information about his or her own work as well as others’ work on display. The gallery gets its name from the mica that is mined in the surrounding areas. Many potters in the area use locally-mined minerals in glazes applied to their pots.
Visitors to Mica Fine Contemporary Craft can view the distinct work of the artists in the spacious gallery soaked in natural lighting. The gallery occupies an old building that still boasts its original 13-foot-high tin ceiling and hardwood floors. Work in the gallery covers numerous media including functional pottery, fused glass wall pieces, paper weights, plates, ceramic sculpture, mixed media paintings, oil paintings, jewelry, fiber art, scarves, hats, lamps, large prints, hand printed cards, mixed media magnets, and pieces that incorporate found objects into handwoven cloth.
