Find studios with working artists on an island in the river
In an island park in the middle of the French Broad River, Marshall High Studios is home to some 30 artists in 26 studios.
The building in downtown Marshall was formerly a high school built in 1925, listed on the US Department of the Interior’s Register of Historic Places. It was completely renovated in 2007 with new mechanics, maple floors, restored windows, a community deck and new native flora landscape. A large auditorium is used for concerts, reunions, fund raising events and weddings. The spirit of the building’s unique heritage remains an important community institution. Most studios are converted classrooms that still feature the original blackboards and bulletin boards.
Artists work in clay, painting, textiles, drawing and videography. Most studios are open by appointment only,while some welcome visitors regularly. Everyone is welcome to visit the building year round for personal tour and sit by the river and enjoy the park with its walking trail, picnic spots, a contemporary bandstand, and a baseball field.. Several times a year, artists open their studios for public visitation, announced on the website.
