Local Handmade Pottery outside Bryson City is a studio and gallery offering the work of seven potters from Jackson and Swain Counites. This enterprise was started in 2019 by JoLynn Matthews. After a career working in displays at Walt Disney World, she moved to the mountains of North Carolina to pursue an interest in pottery that formed when she was in college.
JoLynn is a working potter and the curator of the work on display in the gallery. The style of work varies widely among the potters, most of whom are a part of the Heritage Arts program at the nearby campus of Southwest Community College.
Visitors to Local Handmade Pottery will find distinct bodies of functional and decorative pottery. JoLynn’s working studio occupies one half of the building and the gallery of work from wall-to-wall covers the other. More traditional styles and forms of pottery sit next to colorful and highly decorated pottery, including horsehair and raku fired work.
