Local Cloth is a non-profit organization built and sustained by a passion for fiber. Founded in 2012 to connect local fiber artists with local fiber farmers, Local Cloth has worked over the last decade to catalyze a strong local fiber movement and to nurture future generations of artists and farmers. Rooted in local resources and talent, Local Cloth strives to increase awareness of and access to regional production and artisan practices.
Creating community is one of Local Cloth’s central goals. This organization, with more than 200 members, offers workshops and interest groups on a weekly basis in all aspects of fiber arts, from sewing to felting to weaving to natural dyeing. The space houses five different Resident Studio Artists working in a variety of fiber arts, including felting, needle felting, spinning, dyeing, knitting, embroidery, sewing, weaving, painting on silks, and more.
Local Cloth occupies a spacious building in the River Arts District of Asheville that features an open, multi-use design with a classroom, studios, dye lab, exhibit and retail space, and a natural dye garden and patio area that are open to fiber artists, students, enthusiasts and the public. Its retail space offers a wide range of fiber products that are all handmade by Local Cloth members. Products for sale include silk painted garments and sari scarves, felted hats and bags, naturally dyed yarn and blouses, knitted and woven shawls and scarves, needle felted toys, handmade journals and cards, eco-printed and upcycled clothing, natural dye and needle felting kits. Visitors can also purchase locally grown fleece and fiber, prepared batts and roving, handspun and millspun local yarn, and books by local authors on fiber arts.
