Kogut Violins
Add to Trip

Bob Kogut’s journey building violins started out of frustration. After going through countless fiddles looking for one with the perfect sound, he was ready to give up. But his mentor, Bob Bragg, suggested that Bob might only find his perfect fiddle if he made it. At first, Bob thought there was no way he could make a violin, but as time and practice went on, he learned the art. Since that time, Bob has made hundreds of violins. His instruments fill the hands of local pickers, touring players, and musicians around the world. Kogut Violins are made in Bob’s home in the Happy Valley area near Lenoir, just a few miles from where the events that inspired the ballad “Tom Dooley” took place.

The Kogut Violins workshop features Bob’s workshop as well as a picking parlor. The walls are decorated with more than 100 photos of players that own and play Kogut violins. Visitors to the shop can see the instruments being made with many of the same tools and techniques that have been employed in violin making for centuries. They can also learn about the woods and other materials used in the process of building and finishing violins. Bob especially enjoys sharing his craft and talking to groups about violin making and the setup and maintenance of violins.
