John Furches Gallery
Add to Trip

John Furches Gallery on Main Street in Elkin is a partnership between John and his wife, Shirley. John has been a working artist for 40 years; 20 as a watercolorist and 20 as a printmaker. He is best known for his ability to depict the relationships of color and nature in rural landscapes and nostalgic still life. More recently, he’s started forging knives. Shirley runs the frame shop and creates her handmade Sticks and Stones line of jewelry using leather, copper, and stones. Together, the two of them also build one-of-a-kind pieces of furniture.

At John Furches Gallery, visitors can find prints, including hand-painted etchings that explore the natural world. The element of emotion is also an integral tool for John’s realistic style. He enjoys painting and creating etchings of the things around him—found objects, antiques, architectural subjects, and landscapes. John and Shirley are avid birders. This passion finds its way into much of their work. The main floor is home to the gallery of John’s etchings–available either framed or unframed–the frame shop, and displays of the jewelry, furniture, and knives the Furches produce. Upstairs is a working printmaking studio.
