Graham County Barn Quilt Trail
Add to Trip

Graham County Cooperative Extension started the Graham County Barn Quilt trail in 2009. The idea was proposed to create a barn quilt trail that would highlight the area’s history in agriculture and strong traditions in handcrafts, while creating an activity for visitors and neighbors alike. Volunteers from the community and local organizations came together to donate supplies and paint quilt designs onto wood panels. These highly colorful quilt squares are installed on the sides of barns throughout the county. The trail provides a great excuse to drive through the scenic hills and vales of Graham County.

The Stecoah Valley Cultural Arts Center manages the trail. They are a vital contributor to the preservation of Appalachian Mountain Heritage in Western North Carolina. The Center houses a gallery, an auditorium for events, and the open-air Cherokee courtyard and exhibits.

From Stecoah to Robbinsville, Yellow Creek to Snowbird, there are barn quilts across every community in the county. Painted quilt blocks include traditional and non-traditional patterns. The Trail displays patterns such as Spinning Star, Ocean Waves, Inverted Log Cabin, original designs and more!

In the Cherokee’s Snowbird community is an original design by Jack Teesateskie. Painted by Snowbird Senior Center members, the quilt block it is located on the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians Snowbird Recreation Complex. The word “Snowbird” (du-di) is written above in the Cherokee syllabary.
