Carl Sandburg home

The Carl Sandburg Home National Historic Site in Flat Rock preserves the home and working farm of writer and poet Carl Sandburg.

The Pulitzer Prize-winning author sought peace and solitude for his writing when he moved to the North Carolina mountains in 1945 and bought Connemara, his 264-acre farm. He wrote and published more than a third of his work during his 22 years at Connemara. After his death, the Carl Sandburg home and farm were designated a National Historic Site.

A Step Back in Time

A visit to Connemara today is like stepping back in time. Managed by the National Park Service, the farm and home feel as if the occupants have only temporarily gone out and will return soon. Sandburg, a champion of the common people, lived a simple life, as evidenced by the furnishings, books, artwork, and other items of household life in the 22-room house.

Mrs. Sandburg’s Goats

The farm was also home to Mrs. Sandburg’s champion dairy goats. Today, three breeds of goats are still raised on site and park rangers and volunteers are on hand at to provide information about the dairy goat operation.  Listen to the story of Mrs. Sandburg and her goats in a Blue Ridge Living Traditions Moment.

In addition to touring the historic Carl Sandburg home and farm buildings, visitors can stroll along five miles of walking trails on the property to enjoy the rolling pastures, woodlands, lakes and ponds, flower and vegetable gardens, and apple orchard.
