Town of Rutherford Celebrates 225th Anniversary

The town of Rutherfordton is the oldest continuous government in Western North Carolina.  It was home to the first school chartered by the state in the region as well as the first post-office and the first newspaper. It too is home to the first $1 gold coin minted in this nation. 

This year, Rutherfordton will celebrate is 225th anniversary, kicking off this Saturday, April 14 with a birthday party on the courthouse lawn at 1 pm.  The anniversary theme, “Walking in the Footsteps of History,” will be celebrated and illustrated with different aspects of the county’s history each month from April through December.
