Gary Carden honored with North Carolina Award for Literature

Gary Carden, storyteller, teacher, historian and author and member of the Blue Ridge National Heritage Area’s Traditional Artist Directory, has received the state’s highest civilian honor, the North Carolina Award for Literature.

The award will be presented Oct. 30 at the N.C. Museum of History in Raleigh.  According to a story in the Asheville Citizen-Times, “Carden is known for giving authentic voices to historical and fictitious Appalachian characters. His latest work is “Outlander,” a play accompanied by a full score of mountain music by local musician Frank Lee.
