Pieper Glass
Add to Trip

Pieper Glass sits just above the Toe River in the Celo community. Here, Kenny Pieper uses solid technique, traditional European glass, and his own contemporary voice in the practice of his craft. Born in Birmingham, Alabama and raised in the mountains of North Carolina, Kenny began his craft career in high school when he studied at the Penland School of Craft. Initially, he studied pottery with Norm Schulman and Cynthia Bringle. Later, he found his passion for glass under the tutelage of Richard Ritter. He did his undergraduate work in Detroit at the Center for Creative Studies and earned his B.F.A. from California College of Arts and Crafts, Oakland. After 16 years as a glassblower in San Francisco, Kenny’s career came full circle when he moved back to North Carolina.

While constructing a studio there, he worked at Penland School and managed the glassblowing and lampworking studios. It was during this fruitful time that he developed his expertise in the tradition of Italian glass. Reflecting the harmony and beauty of his surroundings, Kenny produces an exquisite line of glass vessels and sculpture. He has work in numerous museums and private collections across the country.

Visitors to Pieper glass can observe the 4500 square-foot glassblowing studio and gallery. The hot shop is on the bottom floor and the gallery with a wide selection of work for purchase is upstairs.
