Cane Creek

Bluegrass band Buncombe, Swain, and Haywood Counties, NC

Danielle Bishop and Seth Taylor are two of Western North Carolina’s most prominent up-and-coming bluegrass musicians, and they are the lead musicians in the band Cane Creek. The band is rounded out by Danny Bishop on mandolin and guitar, and Buddy Melton on bass, both well known musicians in the area as well.

Seth Taylor, from Bryson City, is a celebrated young multi-instrumentalist. He has won first-place awards in guitar, banjo, and Dobro at MerleFest, RenoFest, the Georgia State Championship, and the Smithville Fiddlers’ Jamboree. In addition to playing with Cane Creek, Taylor is now the banjo player for the bluegrass band Pine Mountain Railroad, led by fellow Bryson City native Cody Shuler.

Danielle Bishop of Fairview, the band’s fiddler, made history in 2006 as the youngest Fiddler of the Festival ever crowned at the Fiddlers Grove convention. Ashley Brown and Elizabeth Hamilton were Bishop’s first fiddle teachers. She now studies with Western North Carolina fiddling legend Arvil Freeman, as well as, occasionally, with Aubrey Hanie. She has won awards not only at Fiddlers Grove, but also at Galax, the Georgia Mountain State Fair, and the North Carolina Mountain State Fair.

Danny Bishop, Danielle’s father, grew up in Bat Cave, in Henderson County. His father, Paul Bishop, was a traditional musician who played several instruments, and he taught Danny to play the mandolin, banjo, and guitar. Among the bluegrass bands Bishop has been a member of are Rock Springs Reunion, with Buddy Melton and Marc Pruett. He operates Bishop’s Violins in Fairview.

Buddy Melton, the bass player for Cane Creek, is also the fiddler and lead singer for Balsam Range, a Haywood County-based bluegrass band whose first two albums have landed songs in high spots on the national bluegrass charts. Melton grew up in Haywood County, and played with Rock Springs Reunion and Jubal Foster before joining Balsam Range and Cane Creek.

Cane Creek has played at variety of venues throughout the region.
