Tim Surrett

Bluegrass multi-instrumentalist, bluegrass and Southern gospel singer

Canton, NC (Haywood County)

Tim Surrett lives in Canton, where he was born and raised, and where he learned to sing. Having been a professional musician since he finished high school, he has toured extensively, and appeared at the Grand Ole Opry, the Ryman, and Carnegie Hall. Surrett is a Southern gospel singer of renown. Before his current role in the Balsam Range bluegrass band, he was best known for his decade with the Kingsmen Quartet, with whom he sang lead and baritone. During his years with the Kingsmen, the quartet received the Singing News Fan Award for Favorite Band of the Year for seven straight years, from 1989 to 1995. Surrett himself was voted Favorite Musician by the Singing News readers in both 2004 and 2005.

Surrett's musical history includes projects with a diverse range of bluegrass, country, and gospel musicians. He has performed or recorded with Ralph Stanley, Larry Sparks, and Tony Rice; with the Primitives and the Isaacs; and with Vince Gill, Brad Paisley, and Keith Urban-among many others.

His solo album, Mountain Home (2006), is a collection of bluegrass, gospel, and bluegrass-gospel songs, including compositions by Albert Brumley, the Louvin Brothers, and Ralph Stanley.

Today, Tim Surrett is a member of Balsam Range. "I have been richly blessed in my musical life," he says, "and whatever I can do to further our heritage would be a great honor."
