Seth Taylor

Country and bluegrass musician Bryson City, NC (Swain County)

When Seth Taylor was a three-year-old country music fan, he asked his parents to give him a guitar for Christmas. They did, and soon he had learned enough on his own that they found him a more serious guitar and a teacher. Though he had a couple of years of guitar lessons, and, later, a few months of banjo lessons, most of his skills on the several instruments he plays expertly (including bass and resonator guitar) have come simply from teaching himself. Today, Taylor keeps up a busy performance and contest schedule.

Over the last several festival seasons, Taylor has won the junior national championships in guitar, banjo, and Dobro at the Smithville Fiddlers’ Jamboree. In 2007 he won first place in the adult banjo and guitar competitions at RenoFest in Hartsville, South Carolina. The year before, he placed third, second, and first in the senior banjo competitions at MerleFest, Fiddlers Grove, and the Georgia Mountain State Fair, respectively. He has also opened for or appeared onstage with Charlie Daniels, Brad Paisley, Terri Clark, Tracy Byrd, Blue Highway, and the Inspirations, and made appearances at Dollywood and on Good Morning America. Much of his instrument collection comes from contest winnings, both instruments that were awarded as prizes-like a commemorative herringbone guitar made by Wayne Henderson-and others in which he invested his cash awards. Taylor is also sponsored by OME Banjos, from whom he received a Green Primrose model banjo.

Seth Taylor has recorded two solo albums-Shady Grove and Guess Who’s Pickin’-and has a CD with his band, Reel Tyme, in which he plays with Kevin and Diane Tuck.
