Caleb Smith

Bluegrass and gospel musician and songwriter Haywood County

Asheville-born, Haywood County-raised Caleb Smith has been sharing his faith through music since childhood. The bluegrass artist and award-winning songwriter cites as his first musical influences his father, Pastor Steve Smith, and both of his grandfathers. Early exposure to the recordings of Tony Rice helped clarify his musical goals. He learned to play flatpicked guitar, and started joining in local jams.

He first played professionally with the long-established Smoky Mountain Boys, a bluegrass gospel group based in Bryson City. In his early twenties, Smith and several friends formed a new band, Harvest, with the mission of sharing the gospel through bluegrass music. The band was highly successful, touring widely and drawing praise for their performing artistry and for Smith’s original songs. In 2006, the band was honored with the PowerGrass Bluegrass Gospel Music Awards for Album of the Year (John 4:35), Male Vocalist of the Year (Caleb), Guitarist of the Year (Caleb), and Song of the Year (for their performance of Jimmy Owens’ “He Wouldn’t Stay Dead”). Three of Smith’s original songs have appeared in the Singing News charts.

Caleb Smith is now the guitarist and one of the lead singers for the highly acclaimed bluegrass band Balsam Range.
