Riverbank Stabilization and Mycorestoration Workshop

February 2 @ 11:00 am - 2:00 pm

Free
Get hands on experience while learning about stabilizing eroding streambanks and outdoor mushroom cultivation.
  • This workshop will be led by:
John Henry Nelson of Stone and Spade, a small, local stream restoration company with extensive experience in Madison County
  • Rodney Webb of Appalachia Fungorum, a sustainable mushroom grower and forager in Madison County
Blannahassett Island is Marshall’s essential outdoor gathering space. Mountain Valleys RC&D has worked with a dedicated team of volunteers and contractors to remove tons of trash and debris, grade the banks to a gentle slope, apply erosion control fabric, and plant native seeds, grasses, shrubs, and trees.

The aim of this workshop is to teach attendees how to stabilize eroding streambanks with cost-effective measures such as biodegradable erosion control fabric and live stakes. Rodney Webb of Appalachia Fungorum will be there to teach how to use downed trees to cultivate mushrooms and how mycorestoration aids in transitioning wood chips to soil.

Free to attend, with donations benefitting Mountain Valleys RC&D’s continued streambank restoration work.

A variety of mushroom spawn, some including substrate, will be available to purchase for $10-$15.
Snacks provided. Gloves and equipment will be available. Dress for an outdoor event. Waterproof boots or shoes encouraged.
