Mini-Mountain Heritage Day

June 28, 2019 @ 3:00 pm - 5:00 pm

FREE

The Mountain Heritage Center and the office of Mentoring and Persistence to Success are co-sponsoring a Mini-Mountain Heritage Day event Friday, June 28th  from 3:00 – 5:00 pm to celebrate the cultural traditions of western North Carolina and traditional crafts.  Broom maker Mickey Sizemore, weaver Mattie Davenport from the WCU Writing Commons, natural dyer Erin Tapley from the WCU Art Department will all be sharing skills used in the mountains over the years.

The new exhibit at the Mountain Heritage Center, Unearthing Our Forgotten Past: Fort San Juan will be open. Ben Steere of the WCU Cherokee Studies program will be on hand to help interpret the exhibit and its significant story of interactions between Spanish explorers and the native Catawba and Cherokee people whose land the Spanish encroached upon. Also featured will be Cherokee musician and cultural ambassador Jarrett Wildcat along with the old time string band Cullowheezer featuring fiddler Jenny Monfore.

The event is free and open to the public and will take place on the brickyard adjacent to Hunter Library and the Mountain Heritage Center.  For WCU students this is a DegreePlus event.
