Love & Light: The Blackalachian on the Trail

February 23, 2021 @ 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm

The Ramsey Center for Appalachian Studies, the Black Student Association (BSA), and the Center for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, in partnership with Outdoor Recreation Center (Office of Campus Engagement and Leadership) and the Environmental Studies Program, present:  Love & Light: The Blackalachian on the Trail.

This event will be held on Zoom and in-person in Belk Auditorium (simultaneously). Zoom link will be sent out via Daily Announcements and COVID safety protocols will be followed for the in-person event: masks are required and social distancing will mean that space is limited.

This event includes a raffle for all kinds of fun outdoor swag! Sign up at the event (all MHU student attendees are eligible, both zoom and in-person).

Join us for an evening with Daniel White (HE WILL JOIN US VIA ZOOM), an experienced outdoorsman who has hiked and biked several of the world’s most renown (and longest!) trails, including the Appalachian Trail (almost 2,200 miles from Georgia to Maine), the Underground Railroad Trail (2,000 miles from Alabama to Canada), the 500-mile Camino Del Norte trail in Spain, and the TGO Challenge trek in Scotland.

White grew up in Shiloh, an historically African American community in Asheville, and never hiked or camped as a young person. However, a trip to Puerto Rico a few years ago at age 30 piqued his interest in being outdoors, which eventually led to his thru-hiking the AT. White says, “I think snakes, bears and racists keep black people out of the woods,” and “his mission now as an Appalachian Trail thru-hiker and outdoor adventurer extraordinaire, is to make sure other children of color growing up in Shiloh experience a whole other side to life known as the great outdoors” (Citizen Times).

A student hike led by Marta Escanero Funes will follow on March 21st (rain date: April 18). For more information, email lweinstein@mhu.edu

This event is geared towards MHU students, but if you are a community member or alum who wishes to join in, you are more than welcome to join us virtually. Please register here.
