Learning Damascus Forging with Gerry Drew & Billy Salyers
February 4, 2022 - February 5, 2022
This is an intermediate workshop – students must have a good working knowledge of forging and basic blacksmithing skills.
This two-part workshop will be team-taught by Gerry Drew (Friday lead) and Billy Salyers (Saturday lead).
On Friday evening, students will forge weld a three-layer laminated billet, rough grind to shape, heat treat and complete a knife blank ready for a handle to be added at the student’s home shop using their own tools. This is a traditional “San Mai ” lay up and will prepare the students with basic forge welding knowledge in preparation for the Damascus lessons to follow the next day in Billy’s class.
On Saturday, students will expand this knowledge to forge welding a Damascus billet of between 60 and 100 layers of steel and then forging and heat-treating a Damascus blade ready for a handle to be added at the student’s home shop using their own tools.
Students should bring safety glasses, gloves, hearing protection, and wear all-natural fiber clothes and leather shoes. Students may bring personal tools if they wish to. Students must be able to stand for at least 2 hours at a time and good hand-eye coordination is required for safety.
