Greasy Beans and Pumpkin Seeds!

November 12, 2020 @ 5:30 pm - 7:00 pm

Join the Ramsey Center for Appalachian Studies for an evening of song and sharing in a Zoom webinar. This event is a celebration of a research project about heritage foods and farming practices in Madison County undertaken by a Mars Hill University professor and student in collaboration with MHU’s Ramsey Center for Appalachian Studies, MHU’s Center for Community Engagement, and the Appalachian Barn Alliance.

Guests will take a virtual farm tour with MHU Professor Ethan Mannon. Director of the Southern Appalachian Archives Karen Paar will share resources for learning more about western North Carolina’s rich agricultural history, and Taylor Barnhill of the Appalachian Barn Alliance will talk about the barns of Madison County and his group’s work to preserve their stories. William Ritter of Song to Seed will sing about Appalachian foodways and gardening.

The first fifty households to register online for the event will receive free “Lazy Wife” greasy beans and “Dutch Fork” pumpkin seeds. Both are western North Carolina heritage varieties, the greasy beans from Madison County and the pumpkin seeds a Cherokee heirloom.

This project was funded by a generous grant from a Council of Independent Colleges program called Humanities Research for the Public Good, which strives to connect “independent colleges with their communities through undergraduate research.”

Register here on Eventbrite. For more information, please contact Karen Paar at kpaar@mhu.edu or call (828) 689-1262.
