Airing of the Quilts
May 3 @ 10:00 am - 2:00 pm
FREE
The airing of quilts is a traditional rite of spring in the mountains. After a long winter with families snuggled under layers of warm handmade quilts, the warmer weather of springtime gave women a chance to freshen up and air-out these essentials covers. We want to invite you to be part in this special day! To honor this tradition, the Appalachian Women’s Museum began an annual event in 2017 where as many as 65 quilts hung on the wrap around porch, from clotheslines in the yard, and on quilt racks and other surfaces throughout the first floor of the museum. This year we are excited to once again share quilts of local makers going back generations. Throughout the day John Tichich will play his fiddle and have a working treadle sewing machine for participants to use. Come visit us at our traditional Airing of the Quilts at the Appalachian Women’s Museum.
Admission is free.
Friendship Album Quilt
Visitors will also have an opportunity to purchase a square on a Friendship Album Quilt with their name or honoring someone in their lives.
We hope you’ll help make this a great day by bringing your family and friends to see the colorful quilt displays.
