Co-founders Stephan Michelson and Bethanne Knudson set out to build a Jacquard weaving mill to create exceptional fabrics out of the highest quality, natural fiber yarns. Stephan purchased a 72,000 square feet, brick and glass block building located a half mile from the historic 7th Avenue in Hendersonville. It was built in the 1940s as a vegetable freezer plant but had suffered decades of deferred maintenance. After two years of renovation, Jacquard and Dobby industrial looms were installed and the weaving began. The once-forgotten building now houses The Oriole Mill and Western Carolina Sewing Company (also called Sew Co.)
The Oriole Mill creates fine fabrics using no chemicals of any kind at any stage in the process. The items they design are cut and impeccably sewn by hand onsite by the Sew Co. crafters. The Oriole Mill and Sew Co. share a commitment to quality and craftsmanship.
Items offered in the store include coverlets, throws, decorative pillows, baby blankets, placemats, table runners, napkins, tea towels, aprons, totes, scarves, shawls, wraps and jackets.
In addition to the retail store, tours of The Oriole Mill are offered most Fridays at 1 pm. Proper footwear is required. To register, e-mail Tours@TheOrioleMill.com or call 828-693-5500.
