SUMMARY:Annual Upper French Broad River Clean Up Day
DESCRIPTION:Support the health and future of the Upper French Broad River by volunteering for our Annual Upper French Broad River Clean Up Day! \nThe French Broad River Clean-Up remains the best volunteer gig in town! Since the inception of “The Upper French Broad River Clean Up Day” in 1992\, the annual river clean-up has netted more than 3\,500 garbage bags\, 4\,500 old tires and roughly 15 additional tons of trash along the upper French Broad. Over 3\,000 volunteers have participated in the event\, many of them returning year after year. \nVolunteers show up at Headwaters Outfitters at 9:00 am. Everyone will be assigned Headwaters Outfitters canoes (2 people max per canoe\, no kayaks please)\, paddles\, life jackets\, and garbage bags. Participants should bring sturdy gloves\, river shoes\, and tools such as trash grabbers or long-handled barbecue tongs to grab trash with. It’s always a good idea to bring a change of clothing for afterwards! After a light complimentary sponsored breakfast\, volunteers will hit the river to collect as much trash as they can. \nVolunteers need to have solid paddling skills\, be team players\, and be ready to get dirty and work hard. Headwaters Outfitters will provide transportation to and from the river for the start and end of the day. Once back at the shop\, a sponsored lunch will be provided thanks to generous donations from community members and businesses. \nMore information here.

They symbolize family\, community\, and the enduring strength of Appalachian women. \nDuring this event\, local quilters will proudly display their beautiful creations throughout our campus. Guests are invited to stroll the grounds\, explore our historic buildings\, and engage with a variety of skilled Appalachian artisans as they demonstrate traditional crafts and showcase their handmade works. DESCRIPTION:The Project Learning Tree Educator Workshop is organized by N.C. State University and hosted at Grandfather Mountain. This workshop will take place in the Wilson Center for Nature Discovery. \nJoin Grandfather Mountain’s Interpretation and Education staff and Matt Robinson from the Town of Beech Mountain Parks and Recreation as we explore activities in the Project Learning Tree Explore Your Environment K-8 Activity Guide. This workshop is geared toward K-5th educators\, though all educators\, formal and nonformal\, are welcome. Every participant will leave the workshop with a copy of this guide that includes 50 hands-on\, multidisciplinary activities to connect children to nature and increase young people’s awareness and knowledge about their environment. The activities in this resource are supported by a robust Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) correlation guide\, building durable STEM Skills\, and differentiated instruction. This workshop qualifies for Criteria I or II in the EE Certification Program. CEU renewal credits are available. This workshop has a $20 registration fee.

SUMMARY:Blue Ridge Fiber Fest
DESCRIPTION:The annual Blue Ridge Fiber Fest brings together farmer and artisan at the Sparta Fairgrounds. The mission of this 501(c)(3) corporation is to preserve the history of textiles in the region of northwest North Carolina and southwest Virginia and bring up the next generation of fiber artists. The festival takes place over a two-day period where farmers display their animals and artisans display and sell their goods. Each year is a little different\, but fiber arts are well represented. \nSpinning\, weaving\, felting\, and other crafts are taught by professional instructors\, and materials are available to purchase for all disciplines of the fiber arts. Wool\, skein\, and garment contests are held each year; a consignment sale of gently loved fiber equipment is available for the buyer and/or seller; and the farmer can sell their fleece at the annual fleece sale. Meet the producers: the goats\, sheep\, llama\, alpaca\, and rabbits who provide the luxurious fibers to make the products\, and the artisans who make them.
