SUMMARY:Sunrise at the Swinging Bridge
DESCRIPTION:Back by popular demand\, Grandfather Mountain\, the not-for-profit nature park run by the Grandfather Mountain Stewardship Foundation\, is offering a sunrise experience in 2026. This special event\, titled “Sunrise at the Swinging Bridge\,” will provide guests with the rare opportunity to be in the park outside of regular operating hours and to hopefully experience a lovely sunrise from the bridge’s lofty vantage point. \nThe elevator in the Top Shop will unfortunately not be operational for the March 14 sunrise event due to a mechanical issue. The Swinging Bridge area will only be accessible via stairs (either the set outside of the set in the Top Shop). An option for folks wanting to attend the event but not able to use the stairs would be to watch the sunrise from the east-facing side of the Top Shop parking lot. This vantage point also provides a nice view! We will make sure to have staff roving to this area as well. Listen to an authentic collection of bluegrass pickers\, old-time string bands\, Americana singer-songwriters and mountain storytellers. Cafes\, breweries\, wineries and small-stage venues will enliven this late-winter weekend with sounds that have echoed throughout the mountains for generations. This isn’t a fenced-in festival. It’s a ramble — choose your own path through a community alive with sound and hospitality. Some events are free. Some are ticketed. Every stop will have its own spirit\, and all will be part of the same shared rhythm.

Following the talk\, guests are invited to join the reception\, meet participating faculty and student artists from across the Southeast\, and engage with Bascom instructors whose practices inform the foundation of our educational programs. The event cultivates an atmosphere of dialogue and shared curiosity\, offering visitors a beautiful introduction to the year’s exhibition season. \nExhibition Receptions at The Bascom \nEach season\, The Bascom welcomes the community to gather for a series of exhibition receptions that honor the range of artistic expression found in our galleries. DESCRIPTION:Artists at the John C. Campbell Folk School are hard at work\, crafting beautiful handmade bowls for this year’s Empty Bowls event\, set for Saturday\, March\n28. Each unique bowl represents the dedication and generosity of the community to raise awareness about hunger in Clay and Cherokee counties\, including the Sharing Center in Murphy\, Matt’s Ministry\, the Cherokee County Food Bank\, and the Clay County Food Pantry. Thanks to community support and generous donations\, the Folk School’s annual Empty Bowls event raised more than $9\,000 in 2025 to support local food insecurity efforts. \nEvent schedule:\n• 4-5 p.m. – Stop by the craft shop for a 15% off sale on all pottery!\n• 5 p.m. – Doors open in the Keith House Community Room for bowl preview\, selection\, music\, and brown bag raffle.\n• 6 p.m. – Dinner served in the Dining Hall.\n• 6:15 p.m. – Additional bowls and raffle tickets will be available for sale.\n• 6:45 p.m. – Brown Bag Raffle winners are announced. \nTickets are $50 and will be available for purchase on the Folk School website starting on Feb. 16.\nTickets include a delicious meal featuring soup\, salad\, bread\, beverage\, and a handmade bowl to take home. DESCRIPTION:Let your creativity flow during Downtown Boone Art Crawls! \nIn addition to Fridays and Saturdays throughout the semester\, the Turchin Center offers additional hours during Art Crawl evenings in Spring 2026. \nWorkshops are led by Appalachian State University student instructor Zoe Efthymiou. Drop-in Artmaking will be a time to create and play with art making materials in the Moskowitz Gallery on Fridays and 3002 on Saturdays\, casual and welcoming settings. Open to all skill levels. \nAll workshops are FREE and open to Appalachian State University students\, staff and faculty members and community members. \nEducational programming is brought to you in part by the generous support of the Tina Silverstein Opportunity Fund.
