SUMMARY:The Arb in Focus: 40 Views for 40 Years
DESCRIPTION:See the Arboretum from the viewpoint of those most familiar with it! \nThe Arb in Focus: 40 Views for 40 Years is a photography project celebrating the Arboretum’s 40th anniversary. For the occasion\, 40 people connected to the Arboretum\, either as staff\, members\, or volunteers have taken ‘point and shoot’ digital cameras onto the grounds to photograph what matters most to them\, using small pocket digital cameras. \nThe collected photographs represent hundreds of moments on the grounds – on the trails\, in the formal gardens and ‘behind the scenes.’ Though the beauty of the gardens is certainly part of the experience\, viewers of The Arb in Focus can expect more than plants\, trees\, and trails\, as participating photographers capture candid moments and sights that convey what it looks like to spend a day at the Arboretum. \nAfter the completion of The Arb in Focus\, the cameras will be used for the Education department’s Discovery summer camps.

SUMMARY:Airing of the Quilts
DESCRIPTION:From a bitter cold winter to sunshine and warmer temperatures\, Spring is the perfect time to enjoy the outdoors and freshen up & air out quilts for next winter. \nAiring of the Quilts event is a celebration of the material culture and history of the Cashiers Valley area. The Appalachian tradition\, “Airing of the Quilts\,” marks the arrival of spring\, when families hang quilts outdoors to freshen them after a long winter. More than a practical task\, it’s a cultural celebration — an opportunity to showcase handcrafted quilts and honor a rich heritage. In Appalachia\, quilts represent more than warmth; they reflect the region’s creativity\, resourcefulness\, and storytelling. They symbolize family\, community\, and the enduring strength of Appalachian women. \nDuring this event\, local quilters will proudly display their beautiful creations throughout our campus. Guests are invited to stroll the grounds\, explore our historic buildings\, and engage with a variety of skilled Appalachian artisans as they demonstrate traditional crafts and showcase their handmade works. This year\, artisan demonstrations will include blacksmithing\, glassblowing\, weaving\, woodworking\, wool spinning\, and more! Kids and adults will enjoy the opportunity to paint their own barn quilt squares. 19th-century lawn games will take place on our campus grounds. Enjoy live music by local bands including Owen Grooms\, Young Mountain Magic\, and Creekwater Collective in the perfect musical setting for a day steeped in heritage and craftsmanship! \nThis event is free & open to the public. Pack a picnic lunch\, bring a blanket\, and join us for a full day of Appalachian culture!
