SUMMARY:The Bascom's Spring Exhibition Reception
DESCRIPTION:Celebrating: \n• Emergence: A Survey of Southeastern Studio Programs\n• Winter Resident Artist Exhibition by Casey Schachner\n• Bascom Instructor Showcase \nThe season’s first reception centers on mentorship\, material exploration\, and the many ways artists learn from one another across generations. The afternoon begins with a 2 pm artist talk by Casey Schachner\, The Bascom’s 2025–2026 Winter Resident Artist\, who will discuss the process-driven sculptural investigations that shape her residency exhibition. Following the talk\, guests are invited to join the reception\, meet participating faculty and student artists from across the Southeast\, and engage with Bascom instructors whose practices inform the foundation of our educational programs. The event cultivates an atmosphere of dialogue and shared curiosity\, offering visitors a beautiful introduction to the year’s exhibition season. \nExhibition Receptions at The Bascom \nEach season\, The Bascom welcomes the community to gather for a series of exhibition receptions that honor the range of artistic expression found in our galleries. These events highlight both contemporary practice and historical perspectives\, offering space to encounter new work alongside significant works from the past. Receptions provide a meaningful opportunity to speak with artists\, curators\, and other contributors\, gaining insight into the ideas\, histories\, and processes that shape each exhibition. Visitors may also enjoy connecting with fellow art enthusiasts in an informal\, welcoming environment. Light refreshments are served\, encouraging conversation and a shared sense of discovery across our campus.

SUMMARY:The Winter Ramble
DESCRIPTION:Enjoy a weekend filled with Appalachian mountain music during The Winter Ramble. This inaugural three-day celebration rambles throughout Hendersonville and Henderson County spotlighting performances of traditional mountain music — the kind born from front porches\, churches and dance halls across the Blue Ridge. Listen to an authentic collection of bluegrass pickers\, old-time string bands\, Americana singer-songwriters and mountain storytellers. Cafes\, breweries\, wineries and small-stage venues will enliven this late-winter weekend with sounds that have echoed throughout the mountains for generations. This isn’t a fenced-in festival. It’s a ramble — choose your own path through a community alive with sound and hospitality. Some events are free. Some are ticketed. Every stop will have its own spirit\, and all will be part of the same shared rhythm.

SUMMARY:Sunrise at the Swinging Bridge
DESCRIPTION:Back by popular demand\, Grandfather Mountain\, the not-for-profit nature park run by the Grandfather Mountain Stewardship Foundation\, is offering a sunrise experience in 2026. This special event\, titled “Sunrise at the Swinging Bridge\,” will provide guests with the rare opportunity to be in the park outside of regular operating hours and to hopefully experience a lovely sunrise from the bridge’s lofty vantage point. \nThe elevator in the Top Shop will unfortunately not be operational for the March 14 sunrise event due to a mechanical issue. The Swinging Bridge area will only be accessible via stairs (either the set outside of the set in the Top Shop). An option for folks wanting to attend the event but not able to use the stairs would be to watch the sunrise from the east-facing side of the Top Shop parking lot. This vantage point also provides a nice view! We will make sure to have staff roving to this area as well. We apologize for the inconvenience.  \nTickets for this event go on sale online on Grandfather Mountain’s website Feb. 13 at 10 a.m. \nFor more details\, please visit event page here.

SUMMARY:Where We Live: History\, Nature and Culture Speaker Series
DESCRIPTION:The Trail of Tears and Creating a National Historic Trial with Dr Brett Riggs\nMonday\, February 16th at 6:30 PM\n \nFor more than forty years researchers have worked to find and document remnants of landscapes associated with the 1838 deportations of Cherokee peoples from their Southeastern homelands. Here in North Carolina\, we’ve used detailed survey records to find remains of Cherokee homes\, trails and roads\, and the federal military infrastructure used to dispossess and displace Cherokee families. These archaeological landscapes are now under protections and interpretive development as part of the Trail of Tears National Historic Trail\, a National Park Service administered network that stretches from North Carolina to Oklahoma. \nBrett High Riggs (Ph.D.\, University of Tennessee) is Sequoyah Distinguished Professor of Cherokee Studies at Western Carolina University. Prior to joining Western Carolina University\, Riggs was a research archaeologist and assistant professor in the Research Laboratories of Archaeology at the University of North Carolina. He previously served as deputy Tribal Historic Preservation Officer and archaeologist for the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians and serves on the executive committee of the National Trail of Tears Association. Riggs specializes in the archaeology and ethnohistory of the Cherokee and Catawba peoples; his studies of Removal-era Cherokee archaeology and documentary sources guided expansion and interpretation of the NPS Trail of Tears National Historic Trail in North Carolina and Tennessee. His current work focuses on Cherokee traditional landscapes and restoration of form and meanings of traditional geographies. \n  \n
