For the occasion\, 40 people connected to the Arboretum\, either as staff\, members\, or volunteers have taken ‘point and shoot’ digital cameras onto the grounds to photograph what matters most to them\, using small pocket digital cameras. \nThe collected photographs represent hundreds of moments on the grounds – on the trails\, in the formal gardens and ‘behind the scenes.’ Though the beauty of the gardens is certainly part of the experience\, viewers of The Arb in Focus can expect more than plants\, trees\, and trails\, as participating photographers capture candid moments and sights that convey what it looks like to spend a day at the Arboretum. \nAfter the completion of The Arb in Focus\, the cameras will be used for the Education department’s Discovery summer camps.

SUMMARY:Blue Ridge Mountain Collaborative Project
DESCRIPTION:Nine weavers from throughout Western North Carolina collaborated on a tapestry honoring the Blue Ridge Mountains. Susan Gaire came to other female weavers in Western North Carolina with an idea: Collaborate on a single image\, with each artist weaving her own personality into their panel of the tapestry. This piece was designed in early 2025\, and weaving took place between October 2025 and March 2026. Weavers were given a general color palette\, size guidelines\, and the placement of the three ridgelines that run continuously across the piece\, but otherwise had full creative freedom to decide materials\, technique and embellishment. The result is a nine-panel artwork that tells nine chapters of the same story. This one-of-a-kind\, 7-foot-wide tapestry\, inspired by the Blue Ridge Mountains. \nAlong with Gaire\, participating weavers are Jacqueline Fay\, Jenny Zia\, Kathy DeOrnellas\, Anne Berg\, Kathy Dennison\, Madelaine Hairrell\, Stephanie Lyon\, and Betty Hilton-Nash. \nLearn more about this exquisite piece here. \n

DESCRIPTION:Kathi Littlejohn (EBCI) leads a monthly informal lecture on key Cherokee places\, people\, and more in the Museum of the Cherokee People’s TJ Holland Education Room. Topics change monthly.\n \nKathi Littlejohn has been telling Cherokee stories for more than 40 years at events\, festivals\, and schools. She has been leading Cherokee history tours for five years to historically and culturally significant places in Western North Carolina. She has produced four CDs of Cherokee stories: ‘Cherokee Legends\,’ Volume I\, II\, and III\, and ‘Cherokee Stories of the Supernatural\,’ available at select gift shops. She also completed a series of YouTube videos named “Cherokee History and Stories\, “What Happened Here?”

For the occasion\, 40 people connected to the Arboretum\, either as staff\, members\, or volunteers have taken ‘point and shoot’ digital cameras onto the grounds to photograph what matters most to them\, using small pocket digital cameras. \nThe collected photographs represent hundreds of moments on the grounds – on the trails\, in the formal gardens and ‘behind the scenes.’ Though the beauty of the gardens is certainly part of the experience\, viewers of The Arb in Focus can expect more than plants\, trees\, and trails\, as participating photographers capture candid moments and sights that convey what it looks like to spend a day at the Arboretum. \nAfter the completion of The Arb in Focus\, the cameras will be used for the Education department’s Discovery summer camps.

SUMMARY:Blue Ridge Mountain Collaborative Project
DESCRIPTION:Nine weavers from throughout Western North Carolina collaborated on a tapestry honoring the Blue Ridge Mountains. Susan Gaire came to other female weavers in Western North Carolina with an idea: Collaborate on a single image\, with each artist weaving her own personality into their panel of the tapestry. This piece was designed in early 2025\, and weaving took place between October 2025 and March 2026. Weavers were given a general color palette\, size guidelines\, and the placement of the three ridgelines that run continuously across the piece\, but otherwise had full creative freedom to decide materials\, technique and embellishment. The result is a nine-panel artwork that tells nine chapters of the same story. This one-of-a-kind\, 7-foot-wide tapestry\, inspired by the Blue Ridge Mountains. \nAlong with Gaire\, participating weavers are Jacqueline Fay\, Jenny Zia\, Kathy DeOrnellas\, Anne Berg\, Kathy Dennison\, Madelaine Hairrell\, Stephanie Lyon\, and Betty Hilton-Nash. \nLearn more about this exquisite piece here. \n

DESCRIPTION:In September of 1780\, militia from North Carolina\, Tennessee\, and Virginia marched “over the mountains” to defeat British Major Patrick Ferguson’s forces at the Battle of Kings Mountain. This victory turned the tide of the American Revolution in the patriot’s favor. Join us to discover more about life during the Revolutionary War as re-enactors demonstrate traditional crafts and skills including cartridge rolling\, spinning\, candle making\, and an overview of the campaign.  \nSchool Days – Thursday Sept. 10 and Friday Sept. 11 from 9:30am to 2:30pm. Reservations required for students & teachers to rotate through our colonial era stations. Space is limited and reservations must be made through BLRI_Info@nps.gov. \nPublic Day – Saturday\, Sept. 12 from 10am to 3pm. SUMMARY:Overmountain Victory Commemoration
DESCRIPTION:In September of 1780\, militia from North Carolina\, Tennessee\, and Virginia marched “over the mountains” to defeat British Major Patrick Ferguson’s forces at the Battle of Kings Mountain. This victory turned the tide of the American Revolution in the patriot’s favor. Join us to discover more about life during the Revolutionary War as re-enactors demonstrate traditional crafts and skills including cartridge rolling\, spinning\, candle making\, and an overview of the campaign.  \nSchool Days – Thursday Sept. 10 and Friday Sept. 11 from 9:30am to 2:30pm. Reservations required for students & teachers to rotate through our colonial era stations. Space is limited and reservations must be made through BLRI_Info@nps.gov. \nPublic Day – Saturday\, Sept. 12 from 10am to 3pm. SUMMARY:Blue Ridge Mountain Collaborative Project
DESCRIPTION:Nine weavers from throughout Western North Carolina collaborated on a tapestry honoring the Blue Ridge Mountains. Susan Gaire came to other female weavers in Western North Carolina with an idea: Collaborate on a single image\, with each artist weaving her own personality into their panel of the tapestry. This piece was designed in early 2025\, and weaving took place between October 2025 and March 2026. Weavers were given a general color palette\, size guidelines\, and the placement of the three ridgelines that run continuously across the piece\, but otherwise had full creative freedom to decide materials\, technique and embellishment. The result is a nine-panel artwork that tells nine chapters of the same story. This one-of-a-kind\, 7-foot-wide tapestry\, inspired by the Blue Ridge Mountains. \nAlong with Gaire\, participating weavers are Jacqueline Fay\, Jenny Zia\, Kathy DeOrnellas\, Anne Berg\, Kathy Dennison\, Madelaine Hairrell\, Stephanie Lyon\, and Betty Hilton-Nash. \nLearn more about this exquisite piece here. \n
