DESCRIPTION:The Sonker Festival is a Surry County tradition\, presented each year by the Surry County Historical Society. \nIt is held on the first Saturday in October at the Edwards-Franklin House west of Mount Airy. \nFestival attendees sample sonker made from a variety of family recipes passed down through generations. Admission is free\, with a nominal charge for sonker and beverages. \nThe day’s festivities include bluegrass and Old-Time music\, flat-foot dancing\, and an exhibit by local quilters. \n​Sonker flavors for 2025 are sweet potato\, cherry\, peach\, strawberry\, and blueberry.  The cost for each serving is $5.00.

SUMMARY:Woolly Worm Festival
DESCRIPTION:This year’s event – the 49th annual – takes place Oct. 17-18 on the field of the Historic Banner Elk Elementary School. The Woolly Worm Festival is co-hosted by the Avery County Chamber of Commerce and the Kiwanis Organization of Banner Elk. \nThe Woolly Worm races begin around 10:00 a.m. Each heat consists of 25 worms\, and races continue all day until the grand final around 4 p.m. The winning worm on Saturday is declared the official winter forecasting agent. The Sunday worm races are for prestige\, fun\, and small prizes. Worm Races are limited so please arrive early to the festival and register your worms. \nIn addition to the Woolly Worm Races\, the festival features crafts\, food vendors\, live entertainment\, and much more. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a free STEM-oriented science festival where you can interact with scientists\, explore nature\, and grow your curiosity! \nThe Mountain Science Expo is a part of the larger NC Science Festival\, a state-wide and month-long event dedicated to celebrating the impact of science educationally\, culturally\, and economically on our state. The NC Science Festival and the Mountain Science Expo hope to inspire children to pursue—and adults to support—the sciences\, such that North Carolina can lead the country and the world as a place of innovation and learning. \nThe Expo will feature live animal presentations\, exhibitors from across the region\, special interactive activities\, and more! It takes place in both of The North Carolina Arboretum’s main buildings and through the gardens. \nRain or shine\, the Mountain Science Expo takes place fully within indoor or covered spaces at The Arboretum!
