SUMMARY:Summer Tracks Concert Series: Amanda Anne Platt & The Honeycutters
DESCRIPTION:The music of Asheville\, North Carolina based outfit Amanda Anne Platt & The Honeycutters is nuanced\, bringing insight and wit to the stories Platt tells through songwriting. Lyrically driven\, the band’s country roots music often inspires introspection\, whether it be about life on the road\, heartache or hope. \nThere is an empathetic and charming wit ingrained in Platt’s songwriting. She has a knack for accessing a deep well of emotion and applying it to her story-telling\, whether she is writing from her own experiences or immersing herself into the melody of emotions in another person’s life. \nPerforming along with Platt\, The Honeycutters are Matt Smith (pedal steel and electric guitars)\, Rick Cooper (bass/vocals)\, Evan Martin (drums/vocals)\, and Kevin Williams (keys/vocals). https://www.honeycutters.com/

SUMMARY:Madison County Barn Day
DESCRIPTION:Barn Day has a new look this year \nFor more than a decade now\, the Appalachian Barn Alliance has had an annual celebration of our barn heritage by hosting a tour of 3 farmsteads followed by a dinner with local music and a silent auction. To branch out a bit\, we decided to have a different type of festivity. The ABA has switched its focus to restoring the three barns on the Smith Farm and to reconstructing two donated historic barns built in the late 1800s and early 1900s.  We are so proud of what we have accomplished that the tour this year will take place AT the Smith Farm at the Bailey Mountain Preserve on Saturday\, September 6. You will still be guided past barns—FIVE different architectural southern Appalachian styles—by our knowledgeable researcher Taylor Barnhill. And\, as past attendees will tell you\, he will entertain you with stories about each of these! \nBarn Day at the Smith Farm will still have a meal (this time it’s lunch) and local music and a silent auction. To maximize your experience\, we will be limiting the number of tickets to 40 and asking that you choose a time for your tour with Taylor. Only 20 people will accompany Taylor on each tour—one beginning at 11am and the other at 1:15pm.  Lunch will be at Noon. So\, when you purchase your tickets\, you will need to specify a tour time.  Music provided by award-winning fiddler Roger Howell and the silent auction will be your background activities during the lunch hour. And\, of course\, there are paths around the lower Smith Farm and the Hoffman trail up to the peak of Bailey Mountain. \nThis is a great way to introduce you to the southern Appalachian architecture of our barns in a beautiful setting that the ABA has worked for four years to help create. Tickets are $25 per person ($20 for 2025 ABA members). We suggest that you reserve early because of the limit to the number of reservations. You can send a check to ABA\, PO Box 1441\, Mars Hill NC 28754 or use the PayPal Donate button on the homepage of our website to pay (https://appalachianbarns.org/) and be sure to specify the names of the attendees and the tour time.    Call Sandy at 828 380-9146 if you have any questions.

SUMMARY:Mountain Monarch Festival
DESCRIPTION:This free event\, hosted by the park and sponsored by Friends of Gorges State Park and other partners\, will celebrate the monarch butterfly during its migration and bring attention to the species declining numbers. The park lies along the monarchs’ migratory route. The butterflies can be seen in early October each year flying over the park\, heading south to the high-elevation fir forests in central-southern Mexico’s Volcanic Belt\, where they overwinter until early spring. \nMonarch butterflies have two sets of deep orange and black wings and a wingspan of three to four inches. The migratory subspecies of the monarch was recently added to the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s “red list” of the most threatened species on Earth and is now listed as endangered. Those who wish to help monarchs return to healthy population levels can plant locally native milkweed and nectar flowers in their yards and support efforts to reduce pesticide use. \n11:00am – The World of Monarch Butterflies \n12:00p – Monarch Life-Cycle & Tagging \n1:00pm – Butterfly Hike \n2:00pm – Butterfly Gardening \n3ː30pm – Live Butterfly Release

SUMMARY:Adult Field Course: Grandfather's Starry Skies
DESCRIPTION:October is one of the best times of year to stargaze at Grandfather Mountain. The air is cool and clear\, and the summer constellations are still very prominent\, with some early winter sights making their appearance later in the evening. Our goal for this class is to create a familiarity with the night sky and learn the basics of stargazing that can be applied on your own on any clear night throughout the year. We’ll start in the classroom by exploring some of the best print and digital resources for exploring the night sky and cover some of the basics of stargazing and how to orient to the night sky. We’ll also discuss the use of planispheres\, star maps and star charts to find some of the most beautiful deep sky wonders that can be seen through binoculars or small telescopes. During the evening hours\, we’ll be out at various viewing locations on the mountain\, practicing our stargazing skills while looking for meteors and learning about some of the most prominent stars\, constellations and other objects visible this time of year. This event costs $60 for general admission and $51 for members of Grandfather Mountain’s Bridge Club – plus tax. Limited to 15 participants.

SUMMARY:Singing on Grandfather
DESCRIPTION:Singing on the Mountain is an annual Gospel & Worship festival held on the 4th Sunday of June. Join us for a century-long annual gathering tradition cultivating fellowship through gospel music in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina. \nJoseph Hartley began Singing on the Mountain in 1924 as a church picnic\, and for nearly a century\, the all-day\, free festival of gospel singing and fellowship was held on the fourth Sunday of June on Grandfather Mountain. In the spirit of faith and community\, all have been welcomed to enjoy picnics and gospel music performances highlighted with a message of love and hope. Established as a collaboration between The Hartley\, MacRae\, and Morton families\, “Singing” blossomed and flourished in MacRae Meadows for decades.  \nLearn more about this free event at https://www.singingongrandfather.com/
