SUMMARY:Valle Country Fair
DESCRIPTION:Started as a small church bazaar to raise money to build a parish hall\, the Valle Country Fair has turned into a major attraction attended by ten thousand people a year.  The combination crafts fair\, mountain music jam and harvest festival now raises funds for human service organizations in Avery & Watauga Counties\, generating more than $1.3 million for people in need since the event’s founding 46 years ago. \n\n\nAlways held on the third Saturday in October\, the 2024 Valle Fair is happening Saturday\, October 19\, on the grounds of the Valle Crucis Conference Center on NC Highway 194 from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m.  Festivities include crafts\, food\, children’s activities and mountain music.  Admission is free and ample parking is available adjacent to the Fair for a fee. \nThe event takes place in a huge meadow between a picturesque red barn and a field planted with sorghum.  The tents of more than 100 craft exhibitors line wide lanes that meander back and forth across the grounds.  Bales of hay are stacked in the intersections of these alleys to offer fairgoers a spot to sit as they ponder which craft booths to visit next.  \nHandmade is the organizing principle behind the arts and crafts items available for sale at the Fair In addition to insuring that all work is made by artists’ hands\, organizers jury the craft vendors see that there is a wide variety of creative products available to shoppers.  Craft shopping is even more fun for fairgoers when they know that the exhibitors donate at least ten percent of their proceeds back to the charitable work of the Fair. \nTwo stages are set up to provide entertainment throughout the day.  The main stage is for homegrown mountain music\, while a smaller venue presents story tellers\, folk dancing and other children’s entertainment. \nGuests can feel good about pigging out at the Valle Country Fair because most of the food concessions are operated by the church or other non-profit organizations that dedicate 100 percent of their proceeds to community service.  Tables and chairs are provided under a large tent located near the main stage so that fairgoers can enjoy the music while they dine. \nFood concessions include Brunswick Stew\, barbecue\, chili\, hot dogs and hamburgers\, sausage with onions\, ice cream\, funnel cakes\, baked goods\, jams and jellies\, fresh-pressed apple cider\, and hot-out-of-the kettle apple butter. \n

SUMMARY:Asheville Sessions Community Concert
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we conclude the weekend of activities celebrating the Historic 1925 Asheville Recording Sessions with a free community concert featuring local bands performing roots performing music of the styles represented in the 1925 Asheville recordings. \nLocation details to come. \n———————- \nAsheville wrote the first chapter of America’s country music story by producing the earliest commercial recordings of Appalachian music two years before any other city. A century ago\, in the heart of downtown Asheville\, a mobile recording studio was set up at the George Vanderbilt Hotel to capture the voices of a region rarely heard beyond its mountain borders. Known as “The Asheville Sessions\,” the 1925 recordings brought together fiddlers\, banjo players\, guitarists\, ballad singers\, and family groups. The recordings became one of the first commercial projects to preserve the musical traditions of Appalachia and helped lay the foundation for what would become American roots and country music. \nThat legacy didn’t fade. Today\, Asheville produces stars like country giant Luke Combs and guitar legend Warren Haynes\, alongside a burgeoning generation redefining music for the next century. \nExplore Asheville is the presenting sponsor of “The Asheville Sessions: Celebrating 100 years of Americana & Appalachia\,” a November weekend filled with concerts and events linking the groundbreaking work of 1925 to the city’s thriving modern music scene. \nwww.AshevilleSessions.com

SUMMARY:Singing on Grandfather
DESCRIPTION:Singing on the Mountain is an annual Gospel & Worship festival held on the 4th Sunday of June. Join us for a century-long annual gathering tradition cultivating fellowship through gospel music in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina. \nJoseph Hartley began Singing on the Mountain in 1924 as a church picnic\, and for nearly a century\, the all-day\, free festival of gospel singing and fellowship was held on the fourth Sunday of June on Grandfather Mountain. In the spirit of faith and community\, all have been welcomed to enjoy picnics and gospel music performances highlighted with a message of love and hope. Established as a collaboration between The Hartley\, MacRae\, and Morton families\, “Singing” blossomed and flourished in MacRae Meadows for decades.  \nLearn more about this free event at https://www.singingongrandfather.com/
