Mack Snoderly

Dr. Mack Snoderly has been aptly described as a “fiddlers’ fiddler.” A native of East Tennessee, Mack moved to the North Carolina mountains after graduating from East Tennessee State University. In Mars Hill he pursued his career as a dentist. He also resumed a passion for traditional music. He has won over 120 fiddle championships during his career, including titles as a Master Fiddler at Fiddler’s Grove in Union Grove, North Carolina; the Georgia Mountain Fiddle King at the Georgia Mountain Fair in Hiawassee, Georgia; Fiddle Champion eight times at the Mountain Dance and Folk Festival in Asheville, North Carolina; and he was a finalist at the Grand Master’s Fiddler’s Contest in Nashville, Tennessee. Other awards include the prestigious Bascom Lamar Lunsford Award for his significant contributions to the preservation of the music of Appalachia.

Mack Snoderly has been a member of many of the finest bands ever to come out of western North Carolina, including the Hornpipers, with legendary fiddler Tommy Hunter and banjoist Carroll Best, and the Painless Band.
