Natural Treasures
In 1996, the Governor's Year of the Mountains Commission designated forty Natural Heritage Sites in Western North Carolina. These sites were selected as outstanding examples of the geologic formations, forests, streams and native plant life of the North Carolina mountains.
Virtually all of these Natural Heritage Sites are readily accessible and free to the public.
Mountains, rivers, waterfalls and diverse ecosystems are the essential fabrics that make up the magnificent natural tapestry of the Blue Ridge National Heritage Area. The Natural Heritage Sites are grouped into four broad categories below.
