“Stories from These Stones” Exhibit of Cherokee Artifacts

Grantee: Mars Hill College

Amount Awarded: $25,399
Award Date: June, 2007

A Blue Ridge National Heritage Area grant supported the creation of the “Stories from These Stones” exhibit of Cherokee history and culture, drawing from hundreds of artifacts in the Gertrude Ruskin Collection of the Mars Hill College Southern Appalachian Archives.

Dating from prehistory through the 1940s, the artifacts on display include early tools and weaponry, pipes, pottery, a basket, a mask, animal figurines, and a rare fluorite statue head.

The Cherokee exhibit was displayed in the Ramsey Center for Regional Studies. The grant also supported the development of a Farmers Federation Exhibit.
