Grantee:

Clay County Communities Revitalization Association

Amount Awarded: $12,500
Award Date: February, 2008

A Blue Ridge National Heritage Area grant supported the creation of a Cherokee winter house exhibit at the Nelson Heritage Park in Hayesville, NC. The winter house is part of a larger outdoor exhibit designed to portray a typical Cherokee homestead from the 1600s. Located in downtown Hayesville next to the Clay County Historical and Arts Museum, the Nelson Heritage Park will open to the public in the spring of 2010. Students from Clay County Schools and Western Carolina University assisted in building the wattle-and-daub walls of the winter house.
