Canton Area Historical Museum


Courtesy of Canton Area Historical MuseumThe Canton Area Historical Museum in Canton, NC, contains artifacts and photographs that depict the history of the towns of Canton, Bethel, and Cruso.  Included are agricultural and domestic artifacts from the late 19th and early 20th centuries and a large collection of photographs and memorabilia of the town and its primary industry, the Champion Paper Mill (now Blue Ridge Paper Products.)

Other artifacts in the collection include uniforms of local veterans of WWI and WWII, two cannonballs from the Civil War.  The collection includes materials about two prominent Canton area natives, Fillmore Christopher, a creative and inquisitive inventor whose creations ranged from ditch diggers to fruit and vegetable scales, and Fred Chappell, noted author and poet.

The museum building also serves as Canton's Visitor Information Center.  Programs include an introduction to tours of the paper mill and a walking tour of historic downtown Canton. The walking tours can be reserved by calling the museum while mill tours can be reserved by calling Blue Ridge Paper Products, 828-646-2841.
