Historic Sites

The North Carolina mountains are home to over 400 North Carolina historic sites including buildings and districts listed on the National Register of Historic Places , the country's official list of buildings and sites that are significant in American architecture, archeology, engineering, and culture.

Many North Carolina historic sites in the North Carolina mountains received a further distinction by the Governor's Year of the Mountains Commission in 1996, which designated select sites as "Cultural Treasures" for their cultural or historic significance to the region.

These North Carolina historic sites preserve the rich history of the Blue Ridge National Heritage Area, from the earliest, prehistoric peoples to the Cherokee to the European and African immigrants who arrived in the late eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The historic homes reflect a wide diversity of lifestyles, from humble pioneer homes in the Cataloochee Valley to the grandeur of George Vanderbilt's Biltmore Estate.
