Carl Sandburg Home

Photo courtest of the National Park Service.Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Carl Sandburg sought peace and solitude for his writing when he moved to the North Carolina mountains in 1945 and bought Connemara, his 264-acre farm near Flat Rock.  He wrote and published more than a third of his work during his 22 years at Connemara.  After his death, the Carl Sandburg Home and farm were designated a National Historic Site.

A visit to Connemara today is like stepping back in time.  Managed by the National Park Service, the farm and Carl Sandburg home feel as if the occupants have only temporarily gone out and will return soon.   Sandburg, a champion of the common people, lived a simple life, as evidenced by the furnishings, books, artwork and other items of household life in the 22-room house.

The farm was also home to Mrs. Sandburg's champion dairy goats.  Today, three breeds of goats are still raised on site and park rangers and volunteers are on hand at to provide information about the dairy goat operation.

In addition to touring the historic Carl Sandburg home and farm buildings, visitors can stroll along five miles of walking trails on the property to enjoy the rolling pastures, woodlands, lakes and ponds, flower and vegetable gardens and apple orchard.
