Oconaluftee Village

The Oconaluftee Indian Village and Living History Museum recreates an eighteenth century Cherokee village on a mountainside above the town of Cherokee. Guides lead visitors to houses built of woven saplings and mud plaster, early log cabins, brush arbors, and a council house, all reconstructed in authentic Cherokee style (circa 1750). Cherokee artisans demonstrate woodcarving, weaving, pottery, canoe making, arrowhead making, and other traditional crafts. The hour-long tour includes an overview of Cherokee history, culture, language, government, and traditions. A nineteenth century cabin and Cherokee garden are also open for viewing.

The village recreation is based on both scholarly research and Cherokee oral tradition. Many of the guides are Cherokee high school students, who learn in detail about Cherokee tradition through their training and through informal apprenticeships with elders who also work at the Village.

Hours of Operation
The Oconaluftee Indian Village is open daily from 9 am to 5:30 pm, mid-March through mid-October.

Admission Fees
Admission is $13 for adults, $6 for children (6-13), and free for children younger than 6.
