Penland School of Crafts

Courtesy of Penland School of CraftsPenland School of Crafts is a national center for education in contemporary and traditional craft.  Episcopalian schoolteacher Lucy Morgan founded the school in 1929 to help preserve the craft of weaving in mountain communities. Penland School of Crafts now offers instruction by world-renowned teachers in ten media including books & paper, clay, drawing, glass, iron, metals, photography, printmaking, textiles, and wood.  The Penland School of Crafts offers one-week and two-week classes in the summer and eight-week sessions in the spring and fall. Penland School of Crafts also offers three-year residencies to provide a stimulating and supportive environment to artists who are at a transitional point in their careers.

Visitors of Penland School of Crafts can view and purchase the work of instructors, resident artists, students, and neighboring artists at Penland Gallery, which also offers special exhibitions.  Visitors can also take a tour of the Penland School of Crafts campus (listed on the National Register of Historic Places), view the studios of resident artists, and pick up a map to dozens of working studios in the local area.
